What Is ACH Return Code R30?
ACH return codes are used to identify the reason an ACH payment has been returned by the recipient's bank. They make it easier for originating and receiving financial institutions to spot and communicate payment failures.
ACH Return Code R30, also known as "Receiving DFI Not Participant in Check Truncation Program," is a standard code used in Automated Clearing House (ACH) transactions. This code indicates that the RDFI is not a participant in the check truncation program.
Check truncation involves converting a paper check into an electronic format to allow for faster processing. If an RDFI is not part of the check truncation program, then they do not accept electronic images of checks for processing and cannot complete a transaction without a physical copy of the check. R30 is generally a rare return code to encounter and an RDFI must return a transaction with code R30 within the next file delivery time following processing.
How To Address ACH Return Code R30
Nacha prescribes separate rules for handling each return code since each one represents a unique scenario. ODFIs (Originating Depository Financial Institutions) and RDFIs (Receiving Depository Financial Institutions) are responsible for handling ACH return codes according to these rules.
If you encounter R30, the easiest course of action is to reach out to your customer for an alternate form of payment, since their bank can’t process this ACH transaction.
